Hot Cars, Cool Heads: Summer Safety for Cape Cod Families
Here's what surprises most parents: a car's interior can climb about 20 degrees in just 10 minutes, and cracking the windows barely helps. On an 80-degree Cape Cod afternoon, that means the inside of your car can reach 120 degrees fast. Kids' bodies heat up three to five times faster than adults', which means a quick errand can turn dangerous quickly, even on a mild day.
This is the topic I get the most questions about all summer, so let's cover the habits that help.
Three Habits That Protect Your Crew
Look Before You Lock. Lock Before You Leave. Open the back door every single time you park, even when you know the car is empty. Then lock up, at home too, so curious kiddos can't climb in on their own. A good number of hot car tragedies happen when children get into unattended vehicles by themselves, so a locked car is a safer car. Habits protect us on the distracted days.
Leave a reminder in the back seat. Your phone, your bag, even your left shoe. If it forces you to open the back door before you walk away, it works.
If you see a child alone in a car, act. Call 911 right away. Minutes matter, and you could save a life.
One Bonus for Road Trip Season
Buckle up the same way on vacation as you do at home. Rental cars, grandma's car, the quick trip to the beach. The harness rules don't take the summer off, and neither does your kiddo's need to be properly restrained.
Why This Matters
Last month, I met a mom who thought her toddler's seat was installed perfectly. It had been in the car for two years. Within 20 minutes, we found a loose install and a harness that had never been adjusted since infancy. She left with a properly fitted seat and told me she finally felt confident driving over the bridge.
That's what the right check can do: one family at a time, one seat at a time.
